Hitachi Construction Machinery: history of the brand

The history of the world-famous manufacturer of construction and mining equipment Hitachi Construction Machinery began in 1910 in the small Japanese town of Hitachi. Then the young talented engineer Namihei Odaira, addicted to designing electrical devices, participated in the project on construction of hydroelectric power. He was upset that all the main equipment was manufactured and installed under the guidance of foreign experts.

Confident that all electrical equipment can be produced domestically Odaira started working on its creation. He went through a lot of difficulties, relying solely on their own knowledge and skills. Instead of copying foreign designs, a young engineer has proposed an original solution: it was necessary to present to the world the motor of Japanese origin.

Along with their peers Namihei Odaira released the engine of five horsepower, which was the first step in the history of the original Japanese developments in the field of mechanical engineering. Then the engineer started his own company and called it the Hitachi, which translated from Japanese means “dawn”. He put a single Chinese character – Hi (“sun”) on the other – Tachi (“sunrise”) and put them in a circle. The four tabs on the outside of the circle symbolize both the four cardinal directions, and the rays of the rising sun.

Success of developing motor spurred the desire of Namihei Odaira and his team to engage in new developments. In 1949 they released their first troscopy excavator U05, made with Japanese technology. And in 1965 appeared the first hydraulic excavator UH03, which, thanks to a new development with two pumps and two valves, has allowed to increase productivity of the operators: they can now simultaneously elevate the boom and to rotate the excavator. Such functions have market analogues were not.A new idea has taken note of many manufacturers, used in the time standard European design, with one pump and one valve. So the Japanese technology began to gain global popularity.

Model UH03 marked the beginning of several series of excavators UH. For their mass production in 1966 was built the factory Tsuchiura, specializing mainly in the production of small and medium hydraulic excavators.

The company actively developed. In 1970 from the parent Hitachi Ltd Department of division of construction technology and formed Hitachi Construction Machinery (HCM) Co., Ltd, which is focused on production and development line of hydraulic crawler excavators.

In 1987 he developed the first large-sized hydraulic excavator EX3500 Hitachi with an operating weight of 328 T. He quickly gained world popularity due to its power and high performance.

In 1994, the company was established Euclid-Hitachi Heavy Equipment Inc. After the acquisition of 100% of the shares in the name was changed to Hitachi Construction Truck Manufacturing (HTM) and the production of 40-350 ton rigid dump trucks moved from USA to Canada.

The company continued to grow and in 2008 near the town of Hitachinaka was built another plant Rinko with an area of 181 500 sq. m. It produces mining excavators models ЕХ470 – ЕХ870 and ЕХ1200 – ЕХ8000 and trucks EH3500ACII – EH5000ACII.

In the same year he released one of the biggest dump trucks produced in Japan, – ЕН3500АС-2 with a rigid frame and an electric AC drive. Its based on the latest year development Hitachi Ltd., based on the inverter technology used in ultra-fast passenger trains, such as Shinkansen.

Hitachi always carries a high responsibility to society, follows the concept of “lean” and tries to minimize harmful effects on the environment. This is the driving force for creating machines that consume less energy, last longer, and servants made of recyclable materials. Dump trucks and excavators with electric – only part of these developments. So, in 2011, appeared mini excavator ZX35B powered by batteries. In the same year in Japan was released a new generation hybrid excavator ZH200.Based on the experience in the development of hydraulic excavators, battery equipment and electrical equipment, the company has created a hybrid system Trias-HX. The advantages of hydraulic hybrid systems was achieved twenty percent fuel saving.

Continuing to innovate, Hitachi follows the Japanese philosophy of “Kaizen”, which is based on the idea of constant improvement. In 2012 the company began testing the first Autonomous truck, which can move on the floor without operator intervention. This technology has significantly reduced operating costs for mining companies and increase the level of security.

Strengthening positions on the market of construction equipment in 2015 Hitachi has acquired a full stake to Kawasaki Construction Machinery. This contributed to the expansion of the model range of wheeled loaders.

Hitachi Construction Machinery in Russia

Hitachi Construction Machinery began work in Russia in the 1970-ies, first as part of Hitachi Ltd., and then as representation of the European division of HCM. The opening of the branch in Russia allowed the company to better understand the local market and its needs, to work more closely with clients and dealers and thus to offer the most suitable for the region’s products.

Maintaining the philosophy of “Kaizen”, Hitachi decided to place in Russia their production. The management of the company has selected a site for the enterprise, focusing on clients operating in high demand the technique of the middle class: most of them are located in the Central region. Eventually settled on the decision to build a plant in the Tver region.

Russian factory of Hitachi Construction Machinery, commissioned in December 2013. The official opening took place on 25 June 2014. The total investment -3,1 billion. The area of the plant is 40 acres, company – 37 000 m2. Production capacity – 2000 hydraulic excavators medium size (an operating weight of 20-30 tons) per year. The plant produces cars, the average operating mass of the boom thereto, as from may 2017 it began production of buckets for mining excavators Hitachi model EX1200-6.

Production process in Russia is organized just like in Japan, with strict observance of all quality standards of Corporation Hitachi Construction Machinery. The plant’s products are manufactured according to original drawings and technologies developed by the designers in Japan, which, if necessary, adapting them to the needs of local customers. And at the heart of all processes on the system Monodzukuri –Japanese production philosophy, the complex concept of ideas, principles and activities that create safe and efficient work at the factory site. The essence of this philosophy lies in the production system 5S: Shine, sort, systematize, standardize, self-discipline. The specialists of the parent plant from Japan conduct an annual audit Monozukuri across the group Hitachi Construction Machinery.

In 2018, Hitachi Construction Machinery Eurasia will continue to follow its core mission in Russia – to be closer to its customers and to offer high quality products, the most suitable for the domestic market.
