Aurus presidential limousine: what we know about him and what remains to be learned

One car brand in our country has become more. This brand sounds for the Russian ear unusually – Aurus, and offered under it will be models exclusively of the highest class

The first novelty was tried on by President Vladimir Putin, having arrived at her on his own inauguration on May 7. Such a sensation around the car in our country has not been raised since the launch of the series “Zhiguli” in 1970. And no wonder: Aurus – the first Russian car of the highest class since the days of Gorbachev. In any country in the world, such machines are given increased attention.

Pretending in the mind of the possibilities of the domestic car industry, by itself, the people wondered how much in the foreign limousine. Is there a foreign engine or your own? And whose gearbox? It looks like Rolls-Royce or not? Well, still, no one suggested starting an investigation into foreign influence on the Russian automobile industry, similar to what is being deployed in the US about the influence of Russia on the election of the American president.

For the first time about a new limousine for the supreme authority began talking in 2012. Then the project was given the conditional name “Tuple” and allocated 12.4 billion rubles for it. Within the framework of the project, it was planned to create a Single Modular Platform (EMP) in order to produce a whole family of cars on its basis: a presidential limousine, a top-class sedan, a ceremonial phaeton, a luxury SUV, an escort vehicle … This was Rostekha’s idea, Moscow Institute with a spoken abbreviation NAMI – Scientific Automobile-Motor Institute.

NAMI is a coeval of the epoch and, together with the epoch, experienced all stages, from becoming and blossoming to total sodding. The project “Cortege” became for the old man an oxygen pillow. At the Institute there were design power-wall, the newest 3D-printers, an anti-gravity casting and a top-secret workshop, where they promise to produce 200-250 cars of the EMP family (Uniform modular platform) every year. All this would hardly have happened in NAMI under other circumstances.

Are such ventures justified economically? To answer this question, it is necessary to take into account the specifics of the Russian economy as a whole. And to recognize as a given the crumbly state “undercapitalism”. After all, even the statutory competition for the development of EMP was not carried out – NAMI was approved by a special government decree of September 13, 2013. Hand on heart, and what were the alternatives? ZiL for the entire 100-year history could not master the elementary fuel injection and put an antediluvian three-stage “automatic” even on the Gorbachev limousine. In addition, the flagship of Moscow’s industry was in ruins: all the promises to keep the car production at Zile, publicly first data Luzhkov, and then Sobyanin, were empty words.

Incidentally, the chief designer of FGUP NAMI in general and the EMP project in particular Vadim Pereverzev once started on GAZ. From there, in 1998, he went to a two-month foreign travel to Italy, in a joint with FIAT work on the “Volga” a new generation. Back to Nizhny Pereverzev did not return, worked first in FIAT, then in Jeep, where he became the leading designer of compact crossovers Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade. This is what the Kremlin propagandists mean when they say with pride about “many of our engineers who worked in the West and decided to return.”

“Tuples,” that is, “Auruses”, are already to the full sway to the Kremlin and back, Putin sits side by side on the limousine seat of Crown Prince, the kids shoot a beautiful typewriter on the phone and put on the Web.

In this public (or at least journalists) novelty persistently do not show, delaying the intrigue. Whether this is a considered strategy of brand promotion to the market or a consequence of banal bureaucracy – while this only generates additional distrust of the project. Although I suggest skeptics just think about what it’s like to create a modern car from scratch. No matter what class – a budget car or a representative limousine. It took us 5 years and (roughly) $ 200 million. Foreign factories cope faster, but they spend about five times more on solving similar tasks.

Paradoxical as it may sound, the main problem of the “Cortege” project is the same as that of its customer: distrust of the electorate. Having said once that the company Porsche Engineering was involved in the creation of the “Cortege”, try to convince me that under the hood is the engine of the original design! But for this, there are engineering firms to help others develop. This is their bread. Porsche Engineering worked with AvtoVAZ, Harley-Davidson, Rolls-Royce, SEAT, Yamaha, with many more, the terms of the contract do not allow to talk about whom. Have attracted. What’s wrong with that?

Interestingly, the engine block “Cortege” is cast in the German company Shvabe Munich – it belongs to “Rosteha” and pours blocks for half of the teams of “Formula-1” or, for example, for the fashionable British supercar manufacturer McLaren, who recently released his 15-thousandth car . Well, is not it cool?
